Zallie’s Fresh Bakery provides a wide variety of treats – sweet and savory – guaranteed to delight even the pickiest of palates.

We’re known for our selection of authentic Italian desserts including cookies, cakes, tarts, cannoli, brownies, bars, cream puffs, and eclairs. That was George Zallie’s vision when he opened his first store in 1987. He wanted to offer a true Italian experience, which meant having two Italian bakers – Sergio Longoni and Nino Carbone – visit the United States and teach his employees how to make these special desserts.

Our Italian desserts and cookies are still made in-store from scratch with the same authentic Italian recipes brought to us by Sergio and Nino.

We’ve also used their recipe to develop a range of products known collectively as Zallie’s Bread. Take home French baguettes, ciabatta loaves, Italian boule, and sourdough rolls – all baked fresh daily. Our specialty loaves pack quite the flavor punch – some include mix-ins like raisins or apricots, others are made with fresh herbs like rosemary or sun-dried tomatoes. From challah to pumpernickel, the entire 35-variety line is baked on nut-free equipment.

Additionally, we offer fresh-baked bagels, donuts, and other confections. Our talented bakers are also able to create specialty and custom cakes. They offer the perfect finish to anything from our Zallie’s Fresh Kitchen Catering department.

History of Our Italian Desserts

In 1987, my Dad, George Zallie was preparing to open his first super store. He wanted to offer a uniqueness not found in other supermarkets. A big part of his focus became improving the bakery. At that time, supermarket bakeries were known for offering frozen products that were thawed and baked, not made from scratch in the store. He set out to change that!

On a trip to Italy, he met two Italian bakers named Sergio Longoni and Nino Carbone. He convinced them to come to the United States for a few months to teach his bakery associates how to make true Italian desserts. The Italian desserts and cookies that we offer today are made from scratch in-store with these authentic Italian recipes brought to us by Sergio and Nino in 1987.
